Columbia Gorge Sail & Recreation Parks

"Hot spots" for sailboarding along the Columbia span a distance of 70 miles from east to west. Each site is different with its own unique sailing conditions and points of special interest. But whether you're just getting started or are ready to hit the eight-foot swells, there's something for everyone in the gorge!

Mount Hood Railroad

Ride the scenic Mt. Hood Railroad. Built in 1906, the train is your link between the Columbia River and the foothills of snow-capped Mt. Hood. Available in a vacation package.

Sternwheeler "Columbia Gorge"

This 599 passenger vessel offers daily narrated excursions out of Cascade Locks Marine Park mid-June through September. Sunset dinner cruises, weekend brunches and private charters are available. The sternwheeler operates out of the Portland waterfront the balance of the year.

Timberline Lodge

Huge and beautifully crafted, this handsome, historic lodge is enjoyed year round by skiers, hikers and visitors of all ages who come just to experience the extraordinary setting. Located off of Highway 26, on the south side of Mt. Hood.
 
 
 
 
Maryhill Museum of Art
Its groomed, green grounds are strangely isolated on a rugged bluff above the Columbia River, east of Wishram. Opened in 1940, the museum's many fine exhibits include a large Rodin collection and extensive Indian artifacts. Museum open March 15 to November 15. Group visits are encouraged. Please call to arrange for parties of 10 or more. Orientation available by advance request only.

Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Wasco County Historical Museum

The splendor of the Columbia River Gorge comes to life in the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Wasco County Historical Museum. Your visit will take you back 40 million years when fiery volcanoes, massive landslides and raging floods created the geologic splendor of the Gorge. Experience the sights and sounds of how the Gorge's unique geology and climate evolved into a dazzling array of lush rain forests and arid deserts. Learn about 10,000 years of Native American life and meet the explorers who opened the way to settlement. Witness Celilo Falls and the course of the Columbia River before the creation of The Dalles Dam.

The Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center

The Skamania County Historical Society wants to share the exciting story of human history and natural events that created the Columbia Gorge. American Indian Culture * Lewis and Clark Expedition * Oregon Trail Saga * Timerland Fishing Industries * World's Largest Rosary Collection * Gorge Geology Theatre.

Presby Mansion

Vintage 1900, this well-preserved structure houses the Klickitat County Historical Museum outside Goldendale, Washington. Included in its treasures is a coffee mill and branding iron collection.

Goldendale Observatory

Houses the largest amateur built telescope in the nation. Open for public use, and available to amateur and professional star gazers alike.

Bonneville Dam, Locks & Hatchery

See the inner workings of a hydro-electric facility, including the fish ladders which allow endangered salmon to pass around the dam. Also see the ship navigation locks for the Columbia River and a fish hatchery.

Gorge Fly Shop Klickitat River----Fishing.......for equipment & supplies

Rope bridges and traditional Indian dip-net fishing add to the interest of this exceptionally beautiful area north of Lyle on Highway 142. The Klickitat River has excellent driftboat fishing. Take a guided tour for Steelhead down this exciting river located just north Hood River.

Gifford Pinchot National Forest-Washington

Ice Caves

Formed by a violent volcanic action. Self-guided exploration access is by wooden steps. Warm clothing and gas lanterns are recommended. Ten miles west of Trout Lake on Highway 142.

Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Provides sand hill cranes, swans, geese and ducks an oasis for nesting, feeding and resting during spring and fall migrations. A two-mile loop trail follows the shoreline and passes through pine forests to allow wildlife viewing.

Ice House Bird Sanctuary

This old abandoned gas ice plant near Klickitat on Highway 142 provides an unlikely home for a large population of area bird life.

Deschutes State Park

The 100 mile Deschutes River is renowned for steelhead and trout fishing, and for it's challenging whitewater rafting. The park is accessible by boat or auto. Between The Dalles and the Highway 97 turnoff.

Lost Lake

Located 28 miles southwest of Hood River. Offers boating, fishing, camping and swimming. On still days, the lake bears a mirror image of nearby Mt. Hood. A walking trail surrounds the lake.

Beacon Rock

This 800-foot sheer-walled monolith is the largest such formation in the U.S. The adjacent 4,000 acre State Park provides camping and picnicking as well as boat ramp and overnight moorage facilities. The park and Hamilton Mountain Trail are especially fine for children. The rock stands on the Washington side of the Columbia, west of Bonneville.
